Rangers attempt to keep O's in the yard
Jul 1, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - It's a simple equation. If chicks dig the long ball, and the Baltimore Orioles hit a lot of long balls -- those Orioles, by definition, are a popular group.Baltimore will put that supposition to the test again on Tuesday night, when they host the Texas Rangers in game two of a four-game series at Camden Yards.
The Orioles hit more home runs than any team in the majors last month (46) and finished on an especially strong note, bashing four balls out of the park in Monday night's series opener with the Rangers, their 10th straight game with at least one round-tripper.
The outburst came without Manny Machado, who lost an appeal and thus began serving a five-game suspension for throwing a bat, but the rest of his orange and black-clad teammates didn't seem to mind.
"When you lose somebody like (Machado), you've got to find a way to do it," said Steve Pearce, who hit two home runs in a game for the first time in his career.
Baltimore has hit .327 and connected for 10 home runs in four 2014 games with the Rangers.
Texas pitcher Nick Martinez faces the Orioles again after allowing six runs in 5 1/3 innings of his initial matchup with them this season.
The Rangers have lost six straight on the road, their longest stretch since 2008.
"I have to tell my team to keep battling," manager Ron Washington said. "There are nights that go like this. Hopefully tomorrow we can do it to them."
Martinez is winless in four home starts with a 10.43 earned run average, but has split two decisions in six road outings with a more respectable 3.53 ERA. He hasn't won a game in his last six tries anywhere, since beating Detroit in late May.
Meanwhile, Baltimore goes with lefty T.J. McFarland, who tossed 15 2/3 innings of relief across eight outings in June and is making his first big-league start since June 2013.
He had 2 2/3 shutout innings against the Rangers across two June appearances.
On Monday, Pearce drove in four runs with two homers and Ubaldo Jimenez tossed a solid eight innings, leading the Orioles to a 7-1 victory.
Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy also homered and Caleb Joseph brought in a run with a sacrifice fly for the Orioles.
Jimenez (3-8) gave up just one unearned run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts to earn his first win since May 8.
Leonys Martin scored the lone run for the Rangers offense, which mustered just four hits.
Joe Saunders (0-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up all seven runs on nine hits across five innings.
The Orioles have won eight of their past nine versus the Rangers.
