Angels, White Sox play two in the Windy City
Jul 1, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Garrett Richards eyes up another win as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Chicago White Sox finally kick off a three-game series with Tuesday's doubleheader.Monday's scheduled opener was postponed due to rain, with original starters Richards and Chicago's Hector Noesi now set to square off in the first game on Tuesday.
Richards has won each of his last four decisions and boasts an AL-best 1.05 ERA in five June starts. In his most recent start, the right-hander went 7 1/3 innings against Minnesota and gave up two earned runs on four hits. He struck out five but also walked five batters.
At 8-2 on the season with a 2.76 ERA through 16 starts, Richards has deservedly garnered some All-Star buzz for the first time in his career.
"I would love to be there, but that's out of my control," Richards said recently. "There have been guys who have put up good numbers and haven't made the All-Star team. I'm not really swallowed up in it. There's still another half of baseball to play after the All-Star Game, so that's kind of what I'm worried about"
Noesi has settled into Chicago's rotation after bouncing around between Seattle and Texas earlier this season. He turned in a solid outing at Baltimore last week, as the right-hander went seven innings for the second straight start and gave up only two earned runs.
The Angels turn to Jered Weaver in the second contest hoping the righty can continue his recent surge. Weaver has allowed just one run in each of his last two stars, a no-decision versus Texas and a 6-4 triumph over Minnesota on Thursday.
Weaver worked around eight hits and a walk over seven frames versus the Twins, striking out six to move to 8-6 with a 3.33 ERA on the year.
"I made some pitches to get out of some situations," Weaver said.
The 31-year-old righty is 8-2 with a 1.70 ERA in 11 career starts against the White Sox.
Scott Carroll counters for Chicago and is 2-4 with a 4.76 ERA in 12 games on the year, including six starts.
The righty is coming off a 7-0 loss at Toronto on Thursday, charged with five runs on nine hits and two walks.
Carroll, 29, will face the Angels for the second time in his career and for the first time as a starter.
His setback to the Blue Jays came in the opener of a four-game series, but the White Sox rallied to win the final three contests of the set.
The Angels entered their weekend series at Kansas City winners of six straight. However, they went on to lose two of three against the Royals, including Sunday's 5-4 final.
Los Angeles, which swept a home series against the White Sox earlier this season, have won six of its last eight in Chicago.
