Skaggs returns to rotation to face White Sox
Jul 2, 2014 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Skaggs returns to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's rotation on Wednesday evening when they go for a sweep of their three-game set with the Chicago White Sox.Skaggs will make his first start since June 5, when he lost his third straight outing before later going on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. He has not won since May 20 and sits at 4-4 with a 4.34 earned run average on the season.
The left-hander will face the White Sox for the first time having needed just one rehab outing. Statistically, it wasn't a great showing as he allowed seven runs -- two earned -- over three innings last Thursday.
"I was hoping not to walk as many people as I did," Skaggs said on the Angels' website, "but I still felt like I threw all my pitches and went out there and worked on what I needed to work on. I threw a lot of pitches in the first inning, which you could also attribute to being wild."
Skaggs, 23, also completed a bullpen session on Sunday and appears ready to go tonight against Chicago and fellow lefty John Danks, who has won four of his past five starts while allowing two runs or fewer in six of his last seven outings.
The lone exception for Danks in that span came at Minnesota on June 22 as he yielded six runs over five innings. The White Sox hurler bounced back on Friday to beat Toronto, charged with two runs -- both on solo homers -- over six innings without a walk.
"I'm happy to get a win," Danks said. "Didn't do myself any favors with the two homers (allowed) in the sixth."
Danks, 29, is 7-6 with a 4.26 ERA this year and 3-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 10 previous meetings with the Angels.
After Monday's opener was postponed due to rain, the Angels powered their way to a sweep of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Mike Trout's three-run homer highlighted an 8-4 win for Los Angeles in the first game, while Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton also went deep.
The Angels then made it nine victories in 11 games overall by winning the nightcap 7-5 as Kole Calhoun hit a two-run homer and Howie Kendrick drove in two runs.
Garrett Richards allowed three runs on two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in eight innings of work to win his fifth straight decision in the first game, while Jered Weaver came out on top in the second contest despite giving up five runs over 5 2/3 frames.
"The story of the night was the offense, kept scoring and picking me up," Weaver said.
Chicago came into the doubleheader having won three in a row and saw Jose Abreu hit his major league high-tying 26th homer of the year in the first game, but Hector Noesi walked seven batters and gave up five runs in five-plus innings of work.
Conor Gillaspie and Dayan Viciedo each hit two-run homers for the White Sox in the later game, while Scott Carroll was touched for seven runs on 10 hits in six-plus innings of work.
"I'm going to continue to work hard and try and be better next time," Carroll said.
Los Angeles, which swept a home series against the White Sox earlier this season, has won eight of its last 10 in Chicago.
