Indians top Royals, House gets 1st win

Jul 6, 2014 - 3:58 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Bourn homered, Michael Brantley had three hits and the Cleveland Indians escaped with a 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday to get T.J. House his first major-league win.

The Royals brought the tying run to the plate twice in the ninth inning after loading the bases against Cody Allen. But after Danny Valencia and Alcides Escobar singled and Jarrod Dyson walked, Allen struck out Lorenzo Cain and got Eric Hosmer to ground into a double play to end the game.

Brantley knocked in a run and scored once and Jason Kipnis had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored for the Indians, who bounced back from a 7-1 loss in the three-game series opener Friday to win for the third time in four games.

House (1-2) gave up three runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings in his eighth MLB start, striking out three and walking none.

"I think it was great," said House. "They got some balls through the holes, a bunch of singles, but I definitely battled through it. The guys played great, got me some runs and I came in and held it down for them."

Valencia homered for the Royals and starter Jeremy Guthrie (5-7) was charged with six runs on 11 hits and two walks in four-plus innings to take the loss.

"He wasn't all over the place, but he was missing his spots," Royals manager Ned Yost said about Guthrie.

The Royals had a 1-0 lead two batters into the game after Cain led off with a double, stole third base and scored on Hosmer's groundout. But they were kept off the board again by House until the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with singles and scored on another groundout.

In between, the Indians had a pair of three-run rallies.

Bourn led off the third inning with his third homer of the season. Brantley hit a one-out single and scored on Kipnis' two-out double and Kipnis came home on Lonnie Chisenhall's base hit to make it 3-1.

Cleveland loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth on singles by Carlos Santana and Kipnis and a walk by Chisenhall. Nick Swisher chased Guthrie with a two-run single and David Murphy greeted Francisley Bueno with an RBI hit to give the Indians a 6-2 lead.

Valencia led off the seventh inning with his second homer of the season to pull the Royals within 6-3, but the Indians got the run back in the eighth on Brantley's RBI single.
