Nats, O's shift series to Camden Yards
Jul 9, 2014 - 2:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - What happens when a power surge meets a top-flight pitcher? The Baltimore Orioles will find out Wednesday night at home, when their suddenly red-hot bats are squared off against Washington pitcher Doug Fister in game two of a now weather-altered three-game series.
The teams played at Nationals Park on Monday and were scheduled to finish there Tuesday, but the game was postponed after a 2 1/2-hour rain delay. The final two games of what would have been a four-game set will be played in Baltimore.
Tuesday's postponed game will be made up at Nationals Park on Aug. 4.
The Orioles have won seven of eight games after taking Monday's opener, 8-2, with three home runs in the 11th inning. Baltimore had four home runs for the game.
Fister has allowed three or less runs in nine of 11 starts this season, including a seven-inning stint on Wednesday against Colorado that ended in a 4-3 triumph.
"Doug felt really strong, which is an indication for him that the ball gets up in the zone a little bit," manager Matt Williams said. "But he battled through. He found it a little bit in the last couple of innings."
He's 3-2 with a 5.30 earned run average in six career starts against Baltimore.
The Orioles counter with Bud Norris, who makes his first appearance since a stretch on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain.
He'd won four straight starts and compiled a stingy 0.92 ERA in the final three outings before the injury. He last pitched on June 21, when he defeated the New York Yankees, 6-1.
Norris threw a simulated game on Saturday in preparation for the return date.
He's 2-0 in three lifetime starts against the Nationals with a 3.66 ERA.
On Monday, Manny Machado capped Baltimore's three-homer 11th with his career- high fifth hit of the night, a two-run blast, as the Orioles beat the Nationals.
Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy hit consecutive home runs in the 11th for the Orioles, who moved a season-high nine games over .500 (49-40).
Nelson Cruz belted a two-run homer and Nick Markakis added three hits, including an RBI double in the six-hit, 11th-inning outburst. Machado, who went 5-for-6 with two runs scored during his third contest back from a five- game suspension, is 9-for-17 since returning to the lineup.
Anthony Rendon smacked a two-run homer for the Nationals.
Baltimore won its series with the Nats, 3-1, a year ago.
