Red Sox go for split with White Sox

Jul 10, 2014 - 2:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox picked up a much-needed win on Wednesday. Now, they'll try to salvage a split in their four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Thursday at Fenway Park.

Boston snapped a four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion yesterday, as Brock Holt's RBI single with one down in the bottom of the ninth capped a four-run rally and propelled the Red Sox to a 5-4 victory.

The Red Sox had been down 4-0 heading into their half of the eighth, but scored five times in their final two at bats to win for just the second time in their last nine games.

Koji Uehara (5-2), named an All Star earlier in the day, picked up the win thanks to a 1-2-3 ninth.

Jose Abreu and Conor Gillaspie hit solo homers for the White Sox, who received an RBI double from Adam Eaton as their three-game win streak came to an end.

A Chicago win on Thursday would give it its first four-game series win at Fenway since 1967.

Now the Red Sox turn to lefty Jon Lester, who is 9-7 with a 2.73 ERA and hasn't lost in five starts. Lester did not get a decision on Saturday against Baltimore, but pitched well again, surrendering just two unearned runs over eight innings.

"I feel good. My fastball command has been pretty good, I feel like I've gotten the consistency back with my cutter, which has been helpful at times, just getting it in on righties," said Lester, who has given up just four earned runs over his last five starts. "All in all, I'm moving the ball around pretty well. Keeping it down, keeping the ball on the ground."

Lester is 5-5 in 11 starts versus the White Sox with a 4.93 ERA.

Chicago, meanwhile, will hand the ball to a lefty of its own in Jose Quintana, who has allowed just three runs over his last four starts. Quintana did not get a decision on Saturday against Seattle, despite a marvelous effort that saw him scatter four hits and strike out 10 over 7 2/3 scoreless innings.

He is 5-7 on the year with a 3.20 ERA.

Quintana has faced the Red Sox twice and is 1-0 against them and has yet to yield a run in 14 1/3 frames.

The White Sox had lost five straight in Boston coming into this series.
