O's top Yanks on Hundley's hit in 10th
Jul 12, 2014 - 4:18 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Hundley stroked a one-out RBI single to center field in the 10th inning to lift the Baltimore Orioles to a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.Manny Machado scored on the hit after leading off the 10th with a double off Adam Warren (1-5).
The AL East-leading Orioles -- playing in extra-innings for the third time in their last five games -- improved to 9-2 in their last 11 overall. They had just three hits in the first nine innings.
Brian Roberts and Kelly Johnson hit solo homers off Baltimore starter Miguel Gonzalez, but the Yankees lost for the third time in their last four games.
New York played its fourth extra-inning game in its last 12.
"They're all hard," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of the loss. "You're playing the Baltimore Orioles in first place. You don't want to lose a game like that, but you gotta come out and win tomorrow."
Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He didn't walk anyone, but threw three wild pitches and hit two batters.
The Yankees made a move Friday in another attempts to bolster their rotation by acquiring left-hander Jeff Francis and cash from Oakland for a player to be named later.
They have been adding depth while ace Masahiro Tanaka is out indefinitely with a partial ligament tear in his pitching elbow, the latest blow to a rotation riddled with injuries.
Gonzalez pitched eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits, also without issuing a walk.
"Early on it didn't look like it was going to be an eight-inning outing," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "He was good. His split (fastball) was good. It's a pitch that's been effective and tonight was a good example."
Indeed, the runs against Gonzalez came early on the homers by Roberts and Johnson to almost identical spots in the right-field seats to give New York a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Kuroda didn't allow a baserunner until the third. He hit Steve Pearce leading off the fourth inning, gave up a single to Adam Jones and threw a wild pitch to Nelson Cruz that allowed Pearce to score. Another wild pitch let Jones move up and he came home on Chris Davis' sacrifice fly to left, tying the score.
Jones singled in the sixth and went to second base on Kuroda's third wild pitch, but Mark Teixeira potentially saved a run when he readjusted to make a nice stop on Davis' sharp grounder up the first-base line, tossing to Kuroda for the final out.
Game Notes
