Indians try to lock up series victory over White Sox
Jul 12, 2014 - 1:52 PM (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians, winners of three of their last four, will attempt to take control of a weekend set with the Chicago White Sox on Saturday afternoon at Progressive Field. The Indians opened the three-game series on Friday night with a 7-4 victory, taking the advantage in the game with a three-run fifth inning.
After tying the contest at 4-4 on a Lonnie Chisenhall RBI single, the crushing blow was delivered by Nick Swisher when he belted a two-run homer, his eighth of the season.
"I almost felt like I should take some powder and throw it up in the air," said Swisher, referring to the signature celebration of NBA star LeBron James, who announced earlier in the day his return to Cleveland. "It's hot in the 216 (Cleveland's area code) right now. There's a lot of excitement."
David Murphy also left the yard for Cleveland.
Corey Kluber (9-6) toughed out six innings for the victory, giving up eight hits and four earned runs while striking out five.
Three relievers combined for three perfect innings, with Cody Allen striking out the side in the ninth for his 11th save.
Hector Noesi (3-7) was saddled with the loss after yielding six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Adam Dunn belted his 14th homer of the year for the White Sox and Adrian Nieto finished with two hits and an RBI.
On Saturday, the White Sox will turn to Scott Carroll, who, in 14 appearances (eight starts), is 3-5 with a 4.52 ERA.
Carroll's best start of the season came in his latest outing, tossing 6 2/3 scoreless innings on July 7 while allowing just one hit and two walks in a win over Boston.
"This one felt really good," Carroll said, "I felt confident in myself tonight from the first batter."
The 29-year-old rookie earned a win against Cleveland on May 27, pitching three scoreless innings in relief.
The Indians will hand the ball to Zach McAllister, who's being recalled from Triple-A Columbus. He's just 3-4 on the year with a 5.89 ERA.
McAllister was dreadful just prior to his demotion, lasting a total of 7 2/3 innings over the course of his final three starts back in May while allowing 17 earned runs over that span.
The White Sox are 7-4 versus the Indians this season.
