Peavy tries to keep Red Sox in win column against Astros
Jul 12, 2014 - 2:18 PM (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox will try to extend their winning streak to four games on Saturday afternoon, as their three-game set with the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park soldiers on.Boston will send Jake Peavy to the hill. The veteran right-hander has pitched poorly this season, going a mere 1-7 with a 4.64 ERA.
Peavy has turned things around of late with quality starts in three of his last four outings, but he came away winless each time. He allowed just one earned run over six innings of work on July 6 but was saddled with a no- decision as the Red Sox fell to the Orioles, 7-6.
The 33-year-old has not fared well away from Fenway Park this season, as he owns a 6.00 ERA in 48 innings on the road.
The Astros will answer with Brett Oberholtzer, who boasts similar numbers as Peavy at 2-7 with a 4.66 ERA.
Oberholtzer has been solid of late, pitching at least six innings in five straight starts, although he was far from impressive his last time out when he yielded nine hits and five earned runs over 6 1/3 innings in a July 3 loss to the Angels.
The 24-year-old southpaw has shined during day games this season, boasting a 1.42 ERA in 19 innings.
On Friday night, the Red Sox continued their recent surge with a convincing 8-3 victory.
The big blow came in the fifth inning, when a three-run double off the bat of David Ortiz punctuated a five-run frame for Boston.
Christian Vazquez had a big night, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Brock Holt, Daniel Nava and Jackie Bradley, Jr. all collected two hits apiece.
The ample run support was plenty for John Lackey (10-6) to work with, as he tiptoed around five walks to escape six innings of work having allowed just two runs.
"(Lackey) was pitching to a tight zone and made a number of quality pitches," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "The number of walks, we didn't get many calls, but still nonetheless he didn't break. He did bend a little bit, but he didn't break."
Scott Feldman (4-6) was knocked around in the loss, surrendering 11 hits and seven earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Chris Carter belted a pair of home runs in the late innings for the Astros, giving him 19 on the season and six in the last six games.
Houston lost to Boston for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings.
