Twins seek to support Correia in matchup with Rockies
Jul 12, 2014 - 2:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Correia tries to end a personal three-game skid when he takes the mound for the Twins Saturday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies. The right-hander has given up two runs in each of his last two starts, covering a total of 13 innings, but the Twins have been blanked both times -- to Kansas City on July 2 and at Seattle Monday.
Correia's last start versus Colorado came April 24, 2012 at PNC Park as a member of the Pirates and he threw six innings in a no-decision. He is 3-5 with a 4.47 ERA in 31 career appearances (13 starts) against the Rockies.
Rookie lefty Tyler Matzek counters for the Rockies. Since picking up a win in his first major league start on June 11 versus Atlanta, Matzek has gone 0-3 in five starts. On Monday he allowed eight hits and five runs over six-plus frames in a loss to the Padres.
Last night, Jorge De La Rosa pitched six strong innings and the Rockies got two-run homers from Drew Stubbs and Troy Tulowitzki in a 6-2 win to open the three-game series. Pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes added a solo blast for Colorado, which has won three in a row.
De La Rosa (10-6) scattered six hits and allowed a run to win his fourth consecutive start.
"He's been winning games for us during a time it's been tough for us to win games," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Colorado first baseman Justin Morneau finished 0-for-4 in his first game against his former team. Morneau played in Minnesota for 10-plus seasons from 2003-13, winning AL MVP in 2006.
Eduardo Nunez knocked in both runs for the Twins, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Kris Johnson (0-1) was charged with eight hits and five runs over four-plus innings.
"They were swinging and they made enough contact where they could get it out of the infield," Johnson said.
Minnesota took two of three from the Rockies when these teams last met in 2010.
