Carter, Astros edge Red Sox
Jul 13, 2014 - 1:08 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Carter's RBI infield single in the eighth inning lifted the Houston Astros to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.Boston won the opener of the three-game series 8-3 on Friday behind catcher Christian Vazquez's first three major-league hits and first three RBI. David Ortiz hit a solo homer in this one but the Red Sox managed only one other run despite 13 hits and had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Jason Castro had two hits, including a two-run homer for the Astros, who have won four of their last five since a seven-game losing streak.
Jose Altuve added two hits, including a leadoff double to start the eighth inning that chased Boston starter Jake Peavy from the game.
Castro's groundout against Andrew Miller moved Altuve up to third and Miller intentionally walked George Springer, who was back in the Houston lineup after missing Friday's game with a sore knee.
Miller struck out his last batter, Jon Singleton, before Carter stroked his go-ahead hit off Junichi Tazawa.
Boston shortstop Brock Holt, who had three hits in the game, fielded the ball up the middle and made a backhand flip to second trying to get a force out, but Springer beat the throw.
In the ninth, Tony Sipp gave up consecutive one-out singles to Mookie Betts and Holt, bringing in Chad Qualls. The game ended on a double-play ball hit by Dustin Pedroia to short. A bang-bang play at first was challenged by Boston, but the on-field call was upheld, giving Qualls his 10th save.
"A bunch of good plays in the game," said Astros manager Bo Porter. "Obviously the one to end the game was a huge play."
Peavy (1-8) remained winless in his last 14 starts. He was charged with three runs on six hits and a walk but had nine strikeouts.
"A tough one. It just seems to be the way my games are playing out with tight, tight games," said Peavy.
Brett Oberholtzer went 6 1/3 innings for Houston and was charged with two runs on 11 hits. He was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start in place of Collin McHugh, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a torn fingernail.
"We got a win, that's first and foremost, and I was able to go deep and give my team an opportunity to win," said Oberholtzer.
Altuve hit a two-out double in the third inning and Castro followed with his eighth homer of the season, a drive that hit off Betts' glove as it cleared the right-field wall.
Ortiz drove a first-pitch fastball from Oberholtzer into the right-field seats in the fourth for his 20th homer of the year to cut Houston's lead to 2-1.
Singles by Jackie Bradley Jr. and Betts gave the Red Sox runners at first and third with no outs in the seventh. Josh Fields (2-4) replaced Oberholtzer with one out and gave up a sacrifice fly to Pedroia to tie the score at 2-2.
Game Notes
Boston is 0-8 in Peavy's last eight starts ... Only one of Boston's 13 hits came with a runner in scoring position (1-for-6). The Red Sox stranded nine runners on base.
