Yankees visit O's in nightcap rubber match
Jul 13, 2014 - 2:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees will attempt to end the first half on a high note on Sunday night, as they attempt to earn a series win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.Chase Whitley will get the call for the Yankees trying to improve upon his 4-2 record and 4.94 ERA.
Whitley earned a win out of the bullpen on July 9 against the Indians with two scoreless innings, but in his previous three outings, all starts, he gave up a total of 17 runs over 10 1/3 innings of work.
The rookie is 3-1 in seven road starts with a 4.86 ERA.
The Orioles will respond with Kevin Gausman, who's 3-2 with a solid 3.51 ERA through six starts this season.
Gausman only lasted 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on July 6, but while he worked his pitch count high he was still effective, allowing only four hits and an earned run while striking out seven.
After Baltimore claimed the first game in the series on Friday, New York evened things up on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 triumph behind its impressive rookie hurler.
Shane Greene (2-0) was dominant in his second-career start. He pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out nine, lowering his ERA to 1.32 in the process.
"We were really excited about him in spring training and what he could possibly do for us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We felt he could help us at some point this year, and the time is now."
The Yankees got the scoring started in the third inning with an RBI double off the bat of Mark Teixeira. They added two more in the seventh with RBI hits by Derek Jeter and Jacoby Ellsbury.
Chris Tillman (7-5) pitched 6 2/3 solid innings in the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
The Orioles collected just five hits on the afternoon, with two coming off the bat of Nick Markakis.
The O's had won three straight over the Yankees.
