Pirates play host to Rockies at PNC Park
Jul 18, 2014 - 2:58 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates will see plenty of the NL West when they open the second half of the season Friday with the first of three straight games versus the Colorado Rockies at PNC Park. The Pirates are scheduled to play 16 games in a row against NL West foes and lost two of three games in Cincinnati before the All-Star break. They dropped a 6-3 decision Sunday and Francisco Liriano, who gets the start Friday, was reached for three runs in four innings after a stint on the disabled list.
"I was a little excited going out to pitch," Liriano said of his first start since June 10. "I tried to do too much."
Neil Walker homered and Josh Harrison added two hits and an RBI for Pittsburgh, which went 2-5 on its road trip and sits 3 1/2 games off the lead in the NL Central.
Pittsburgh will put its 29-20 home ledger on the line this weekend.
The Pirates have won three straight and six of seven games at home, and hope Liriano can bounce back on the mound tonight. The left-hander is 1-7 with a 4.72 earned run average and was bothered by an oblique injury. He is winless (0-3) in eight home starts and 1-2 with a 7.16 ERA in three career starts against the Rockies.
Colorado compiled a 4-6 mark on its homestand prior to the break and has dropped back-to-back games since winning three in a row. In Sunday's 13-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Coors Field, Brett Anderson got the start and was torched for six runs (5 earned) and 10 hits in five innings.
Anderson was making his first start since April 12 due to a broken left index finger and was activated from the 60-day disabled list prior to the game.
"I got through the start healthy, and that's about the only positive," said a disappointed Anderson.
Justin Morneau and Nolan Arenado had three hits and an RBI apiece in the loss.
The Rockies, who are 16-30 away from home, have lost three in a row and nine of 10 road games, and will send Jorge De La Rosa to the mound Friday in Pittsburgh. De La Rosa is 10-6 with a 4.56 ERA and has won four straight starts, including last Friday's 6-2 win over the Twins in which he tossed six innings of one-run ball.
De La Rosa has lasted at least six innings during his winning streak and is 4-3 with a 4.01 ERA in 13 career games (9 starts) against the Pirates.
Colorado and Pittsburgh are meeting for the first time since the Rockies won four of six matchups last season. The Pirates were 4-2 against the Rockies in 2012.
