Jones powers Orioles past Athletics

Jul 20, 2014 - 5:58 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Jones homered and tied a career high with five RBI in the Baltimore Orioles' 8-4 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.

Nick Markakis went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, Chris Davis homered and knocked in two runs, and J.J. Hardy added a solo home run for the O's, who have won seven of 10.

Wei-Yin Chen (10-3) continued his dominance over the A's, limiting his opposition to three runs on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings.

Chen entered the game with a 3-0 record and 1.00 ERA in four starts against Oakland for his career.

Jed Lowrie drove in three runs and Brandon Moss hit a solo home run for the A's.

Oakland starter Jason Hammel (0-2), making his second start as a member of the A's and first at O.co Coliseum, was roughed up for five runs on six hits and two walks over two-plus innings of work.

"His command of the heater wasn't very good and he got into some bad counts and they made him pay," A's manager Bob Melvin said of Hammel.

Baltimore pounced all over Hammel with four runs in the first inning. Markakis singled to lead off the game, Steve Pearce walked and Jones brought the two home with his 17th homer of the season.

Hardy added a solo shot later in the inning to stake the visitors to a 4-0 lead.

The O's added on in the third with an RBI double off the bat of Davis that scored Nelson Cruz.

Moss got the run back in the home half, however, crushing a 1-2 fastball over the out-of-town scoreboard in right to cut the margin to 5-1.

Markakis singled with one out in the fourth and Pearce followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Jones then ripped a two-run single up the middle to push the lead to 7-1.

Lowrie knocked a two-run double in the home half of the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth to cut the deficit to three.

Davis added some insurance in the ninth with a blast to right which accounted for the final margin.

Oakland put runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth and Zach Britton came on to strike out Nick Punto to earn his 16th save of the season.
