Giants rough up Lee, best Phillies

Jul 22, 2014 - 7:07 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer to lead the San Francisco Giants in a 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies that began a four-game series.

Hunter Pence went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Buster Posey also drove in two runs for the Giants, who have won four of their last five.

San Francisco starter Ryan Vogelsong was roughed up for 11 hits and four runs -- three earned -- in just three-plus innings of action. George Kontos (2-0) allowed just one hit in two innings of work for the win.

"It was a strange game for both starters," said San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy. "They both gave up a lot of hits. Our bullpen did a great job and really stepped up."

Prior to the game, the Giants signed second baseman Dan Uggla to a minor- league deal. He had been released by the Atlanta Braves on Friday.

Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard each drove in a pair of runs for the Phillies, who lost two of three to the Braves coming out of the All-Star break.

Cliff Lee (4-5), who was activated from the 60-day disabled list before the game, allowed six runs on 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. His last start was on May 18 before hitting the DL with a left elbow strain.

"I wasn't locating that well," Lee said. "I was behind in the count more than I would like to be."

The Giants got a run across in the second on an RBI single from Gregor Blanco. On the play, however, Michael Morse was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Philadelphia answered in the home half on a bases-loaded two-out single from Rollins that scored two for a 2-1 edge.

It was a short-lived lead, though, as the Giants got two of their own on a single from Posey in the third to grab a 3-2 advantage.

The Phillies then put their first three men on base to start the fourth, and Howard brought in two with a check-swing blooper to left that fell in for a single and a 4-3 advantage.

Kontos, though, came on to relieve Vogelsong and did his job well, setting down the next three batters to keep it a one-run game.

San Francisco got a leadoff single from Morse to start the sixth and Duvall followed with his second home run of the season. Later in the frame, Joaquin Arias doubled and Pence followed with a single to left for a 6-4 advantage.

The Giants padded their lead in the eighth when Blanco walked and came home on a Pence triple.

Santiago Casilla pitched around a two-out single in the ninth for his sixth save of the season.

Game Notes

In addition to Lee, the Phillies also activated infielder Reid Brignac and catcher Wil Nieves from the 15-day DL, designated outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment, optioned infielder Cesar Hernandez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and outrighted catcher Koyie Hill ... The Giants placed pitcher Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list on Monday and put first baseman Brandon Belt on the 7-day concussion DL. To fill the roster spots, the team recalled Kontos and Duvall from Triple-A Fresno ... The Phillies left 11 men on base while the Giants stranded eight.
