Marlins edge Braves in 10 innings
Jul 22, 2014 - 3:30 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Garrett Jones hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the top of the 10th inning as the Miami Marlins topped the Atlanta Braves, 3-1, in the opener of a four-game set.The Marlins squandered a bases-loaded, no-out opportunity against Craig Kimbrel in the ninth, but they didn't waste their scoring chance in the next frame.
Christian Yelich led off the 10th with a single against Shae Simmons (1-2) before Jordany Valdespin moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Giancarlo Stanton was then intentionally walked and Casey McGehee coaxed a free pass to load the bases for Jones, who rolled a base hit back up the middle to plate Yelich and Stanton to give the Marlins a 3-1 advantage.
Steve Cishek fanned two in a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th to notch his 22nd save of the season, while Bryan Morris (7-0) tossed a scoreless home half of the ninth to record the victory.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia smacked a solo homer for Miami, which has won two straight on the heels of a six-game losing streak. The blast ended Julio Teheran's no-hit bid with two outs in the fifth inning.
Marlins starter Tom Koehler struck out seven and allowed a run on five hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings.
"Any time you go out there and face Julio (Teheran), you know runs are going to be a minimum. You want to match as many zeroes as you can and try to get the team into the dugout as quick as possible," Koehler said.
Teheran fanned 11 and surrendered a run on four hits and a walk over seven frames for the Braves, who had won four of their last five contests.
"I felt like everything was working today, even though I just had one mistake. It cost me one run. I feel like it was the best start I had this year," Teheran said.
Atlanta opened the scoring in the second. Justin Upton and Jason Heyward singled to begin the bottom of the frame and put runners on the corners. Evan Gattis then struck out, but Upton scored on a Chris Johnson groundout.
Saltalamacchia launched his solo shot into the seats in right to knot the score at 1-1.
Kimbrel filled the bases in the ninth, but struck out Saltalamacchia and Adeiny Hechavarria before Donovan Solano lined out to second to end the threat.
