Hunter, Tigers edge D-backs
Jul 22, 2014 - 6:12 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Torii Hunter belted a two-run homer, Austin Jackson added a solo shot and the Detroit Tigers escaped Chase Field with a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.Miguel Cabrera drove in the eventual game-winning run in the seventh inning, and the Tigers held on for their second straight win after losing three in a row to the Indians.
Justin Verlander (9-8) scattered three runs, six hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings in winning his 13th consecutive decisions against NL teams.
Gerardo Parra hit a solo homer for the Diamondbacks, who were looking to win four in a row for the first time this year.
Randall Delgado (1-2) took the loss in an extended relief effort. He was used for 2 1/3 innings after Vidal Nuno failed to make it out of the fifth having allowed three runs on seven hits.
"The consistency wasn't there," admitted Nuno. "That's why I exited the ball game so early."
Hunter homered just inside the left-field foul pole after Victor Martinez led off the second inning with a walk, and Jackson took a payoff pitch into the seats in left-center an inning later for a 3-0 Tigers lead.
"The first pitch I saw I swung at it, and was able to get a pitch I could handle and hit it out of the park," said Hunter. "I didn't want to wait around and see what (Nuno) had because I hadn't faced him before."
Arizona pushed two across in the fourth, which began with Aaron Hill singling and Paul Goldschmidt doubling to left field. Miguel Montero hit a grounder off Verlander's glove, and even though the Tigers got the out at first, Hill scored Arizona's first run.
Martin Prado smacked an RBI double to left, but the Diamondbacks left the bases loaded as Nuno grounded out to second.
In the sixth, Parra smacked a 2-0 fastball over the wall in right to tie things, but the Tigers answered in their next at-bat when Cabrera nearly left the yard.
Jackson led off the seventh with a double, moved to third on a lineout and scored easily when Cabrera sent one high off the wall in straightaway center. Cabrera was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double, and the call on the field stood when replay was used to determine if it was a home run.
Joba Chamberlain hurled a scoreless eighth, and Joe Nathan worked around a two-out single in the ninth to post his 20th save.
