Marlins hold on to top Braves

Jul 23, 2014 - 4:24 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob Turner made a successful return to Miami's rotation as the top of the Marlins' lineup provided lots of support in a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.

Turner (3-6) was making his first start since June 11 after a demotion to the bullpen and limited the Braves to two runs on four hits over five innings.

Miami held on late to extend its winning streak to three in a row for the first time since early June, thanks in part to its 1-through-3 hitters.

Christian Yelich went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI out of the leadoff spot, Donovan Solano recorded a career-high four hits, and Giancarlo Stanton added two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the victors.

The trio had their way with Mike Minor (3-6), who was peppered for six runs on 10 hits before being abruptly pulled with no outs in the fourth.

Jason Heyward knocked in three runs while Justin Upton hit a solo homer for the Braves, who have dropped three of their last four, including the opener of this four-game series on Monday.

"We got down early and had to battle back," Upton said. "We did a good job of it, we just didn't finish the job,"

Both teams loaded the bases in the first inning, and both starters limited the opposition to one run thanks to double-play balls.

"After that first inning I kind of settled down," Turner said of his outing. "I felt strong getting back up and down, which I hadn't done in awhile. So overall, I was happy with it."

Minor did not limit the damage for long, however, as the Marlins tagged him for three runs in the third and two more in the fourth.

Stanton drove in Yelich with a double down the left-field line, Casey McGehee pushed across Solano with a groundout and Jeff Baker capped the second inning with an RBI single through the left side.

Turner served up Upton's 18th home run of the year in the home half but helped himself in Miami's next turn with a leadoff double. Yelich brought him in with a base hit, and Minor's night was done following Solano's ground-rule double.

David Hale came out of the bullpen and surrendered a run on a Marcell Ozuna groundout, proving to be the deciding run as the Braves rallied for three runs in the eighth.

Tommy La Stella plated Tyler Pastornicky with a single, and Heyward tacked on a two-out, two-run base hit to make it a one-run game.

Steve Cishek, though, closed out the shaky win in the ninth to earn his 23rd save and third in as many days. The closer gave up a leadoff single to Chris Johnson, and his batterymate, Jeff Mathis, threw out pinch-runner Jordan Schafer to keep the Braves at bay.

Yelich scored on McGehee's double-play ground ball in the first inning, and Heyward answered with an RBI single in the bottom half.

Game Notes

Miami last won three straight during a four-game winning streak from June 2-5 ... Minor, at No. 7 overall, was taken two picks ahead of Turner in the 2009 draft ... Yelich extended his road hitting streak to 16 games ... Chris Hatcher tossed two perfect innings of relief behind Turner.
