Amidst moves, Padres continue series with Cubs
Jul 23, 2014 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres are in all-out fire sale mode. The next guy to go could be the one taking the ball on Wednesday when the Padres continue a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. After sending closer Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend, the Padres continued to make moves on Tuesday, shipping third baseman Chase Headley to the New York Yankees.
San Diego is also believed to be taking calls on right-hander Ian Kennedy, who is 7-9 this year with a 3.62 ERA. Kennedy wasn't particularly sharp in his first start back from the All-Star break, as the New York Mets reached him for four runs in five innings of a no-decision.
Still, he is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA (six earned runs in 26 innings pitched) in four starts this month.
"He's pitching great," Padres manager Bud Black recently said of the former 21-game winner. "He really had command of the outside corner to right-handed hitters. I thought that was the big difference tonight. He shut them down."
Kennedy beat the Cubs earlier this season and is 4-2 in nine starts against them with a 5.80 ERA.
Chicago will counter with lefty Tsuyoshi Wada, who will be making his second big league start. Wada fared well his first time out against Cincinnati, surrendering just an unearned run and five hits in five innings. However, he did not get a decision in his team's 6-5 win.
Chicago drew first blood in this series on Tuesday, as Anthony Rizzo clubbed two home runs to set a new single-season career high and Kyle Hendricks picked up his first major league win in the Cubs' 6-0 win.
Hendricks (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to make his second big league start, held the Padres to five hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked three.
"Definitely the best day of my life," Hendricks said. "First major league win, it's what you work for since you were a little kid playing T-ball."
Justin Ruggiano had two RBI and Arismendy Alcantara also homered for the Cubs, who snapped a five-game losing streak.
San Diego starter Eric Stults (3-12) matched Minnesota's Kevin Correia for the most losses in the majors after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings.
The Padres have dropped four of their last six.
Chicago split four games with the Padres earlier in the year.
