Royals top Indians on Butler's blast
Jul 26, 2014 - 5:46 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Butler's two-run home run gave the Kansas City Royals a 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians in the second of a four-game set.Salvador Perez went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored while Mike Moustakas also hit a solo home run for the Royals, who have won four straight.
Starter Yordano Ventura lasted 6 1/3 innings and was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Kelvin Herrera (2-2) got the win for pitching a scoreless eighth inning.
Carlos Santana hit a pair of home runs and drove in three, while Jason Kipnis also drove in a run for the Indians, who have lost five of their last six games. Josh Tomlin gave up four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
"We have to win games to make that change, that's all there is to it," said Kipnis. "It starts with the pitcher and the team in general, we just have to start winning games."
Salvador Perez hit a one-out single off of Carlos Carrasco (3-4) in the eighth and Nick Hagadone then took the mound. After getting Moustakas to pop up, Butler punched a shot over the left field wall for a 6-4 lead.
"I haven't been having a good year, I've been grinding and putting in my work but haven't had many results for it," said Butler. "But I'm glad I was able to help out here tonight and hopefully I can build off that."
Aaron Crow pitched around a leadoff double in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
The Royals opened the scoring in the second inning with back-to-back solo homers from Perez and Moustakas for a 2-0 lead.
Santana's solo home run in the fourth got the Indians on the board, but the Royals answered in the home half.
Alex Gordon led off with a single and was still there three batters later when Raul Ibanez punched a pitch into the right-field corner. Gordon easily scored and Ibanez was sliding into third base when Kipnis' throw went wide, getting stuck under the wall and allowing Ibanez to cross home for a 4-1 lead.
The sixth inning saw the Indians cut into their deficit, as Michael Brantley hit a one-out single and Santana followed with his second homer of the game and 17th of the season to make it a 4-3 game.
Cleveland tied the game in the seventh on Kipnis' sacrifice fly that scored Yan Gomes, who had reached base earlier in the frame on a bad throw from Moustakas.
Game Notes
Moustakas has 13 home runs this season, six of which have come against Cleveland ... Santana had his fourth multi-homer game of his career ... The Indians were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded six.
