Leake pitches Reds past Diamondbacks
Jul 30, 2014 - 6:49 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Leake tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings, guiding the struggling Cincinnati Reds to a crucial 3-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the middle installment of a three-game series.Leake (8-9) only yielded five hits and struck out eight batters, as the Reds won for just the second time since the All-Star break. Leake had allowed four runs and at least eight hits in each of his previous three starts.
"My goal tonight was to keep them in the infield and did a good job, we did a great job in the infield today," Leake said.
Todd Frazier, Brayan Pena and Leake drove in runs for Cincinnati, which will aim to win its first series since July 11-13 in Wednesday's rubber match.
Trevor Cahill (1-8) fell to 0-6 in starts this season after giving up all three runs on seven hits. Bo Schultz faced the minimum in two innings out of the bullpen. Arizona's relievers have now gone 18 2/3 straight innings without surrendering a run.
"I think he's thrown the ball better and better," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said of Cahill. "We just have to score some runs for him."
Billy Hamilton led off the home first with a double to left and scored two batters later on Frazier's RBI single. The two players went a combined 0- for-12 with seven strikeouts during Monday's 15-inning loss in the series opener.
Leake helped himself an inning later, driving in his third run of the year with a single to left.
Pena plated Frazier in the sixth inning for Cincinnati's third run.
Leake allowed a few scattered runners into scoring position throughout the contest, but never buckled. Didi Gregorius tripled with one out in the third inning and two errors allowed Aaron Hill to reach third in the fourth, but both runners were stranded.
Gerardo Parra doubled with two outs in the seventh and Gregorius singled, putting runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter David Peralta put a drive into a 1-1 offering, but Hamilton had it played perfectly in center and came up with the catch.
Leake went back to the mound for the eighth inning but couldn't finish it, departing with two outs and runners on first and second. Jonathan Broxton needed just one pitch to escape the threat, getting Mark Trumbo to fly to center.
Aroldis Chapman nailed down his 100th career save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Chapman has at least one strikeout in 45 straight appearances.
