Anderson targets back-to-back wins at Wrigley

Jul 30, 2014 - 2:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Lefty Brett Anderson will battle the recent Colorado offensive demons on Wednesday night, when he takes the mound for the Rockies against the Chicago Cubs in the third test of a four-game series at Wrigley Field.

The Rockies have lost eight straight games on the road, Anderson hasn't won consecutive starts in nearly two years and the team managed exactly zero runs in 15 innings on Tuesday after scoring three in the first. Colorado lost, 4-3, in 16 innings.

"When you go 15 innings without scoring a run, you don't deserve to win," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

The team has managed a meager .196 batting average with runners in scoring position -- including a 1-for-8 showing in those scenarios on Tuesday -- and scored only 18 runs across the eight games. Colorado remains without offensive sparkplug Troy Tulowitzki due to injury, but got Justin Morneau back on Tuesday after he'd missed 10 games.

Anderson missed three months with a broken finger on his left hand before rebounding to strike out eight batters in seven innings of Colorado's 3-2, 11- inning loss to Pittsburgh on July 19. In one start since, he tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed two hits while defeating the Pirates, 8-1, on Friday.

The victory was his first since April 2013 when he pitched with Oakland. The last time he won consecutive starts was in 2012, when he won four straight for the Athletics.

"Your goal when you pitch is to win the ballgame and it's been a while," Anderson said. "It's pretty satisfying, especially my first win in the National League. Hopefully I'll get on a roll here."

He has never faced the Cubs.

Chicago starts lefty Travis Wood while aiming for a three-game home win streak for the first time since late June/early July.

Wood is winless in seven starts since June 15 while losing four decisions and logging a 6.38 earned run average. He gave up five runs in five innings against St. Louis on Friday, in a game the Cubs won, 7-6.

He's faced the Rockies three times and split two decisions with a 2.00 ERA.

The lone matchup at Wrigley yielded the lone victory in May 2013, when he tossed seven shutout innings in a 9-1 win.

Colorado and Chicago split six meetings last season.
