Dodgers beat Angels in dramatic fashion
Aug 6, 2014 - 6:07 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Juan Uribe scored on David Freese's throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning to boost the Dodgers over the Angels, 5-4, in the second installment of the Freeway Series.Uribe and A.J. Ellis singled with one out against Kevin Jepsen (0-1) to put runners at the corners. Andre Ethier, pinch-hitting for Kenley Jansen (2-3), hit a bouncer to third baseman David Freese, who bare-handed the ball and threw wide to home for his second error of the night. Catcher Chris Iannetta couldn't hold on, as the NL West leaders bounced back from a 5-0 loss Monday.
"Andre's been a great teammate. It was good to see him come through in that situation, putting the ball in play," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.
Clayton Kershaw, who remained unbeaten in his last 12 starts, allowed seven hits and three runs and struck out seven over the first seven frames for the Dodgers.
"They're a good fastball hitting team," Ellis said of the Angels. "Clayton made adjustments. He knew he needed to use both sides of the plate. A great team win, two really good team going after each other."
Angels starter Hector Santiago gave up five hits and four runs -- three earned -- over 5 1/3 innings.
The Dodgers widened their lead to 2 1/2 games over the Giants in the NL West, while the Angels fell two games behind AL West-leading Oakland.
Uribe belted a three-run homer in the second inning, after Iannetta delivered a two-run double in the top portion.
Albert Pujols doubled in Mike Trout in the top of the third, but the Dodgers went ahead 4-3 in the sixth. Matt Kemp reached safely on Freese's throwing error, stole second and went to third when the throw from Iannetta skipped into center field. Scott Van Slyke then lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
"On the defensive end we hurt ourselves," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We were close, then we cracked the door open for them."
Pujols tied the game by launching his 21st homer of the year, a shot to left with one out in the eighth off Brian Wilson.
