Peralta goes after win No. 14
Aug 7, 2014 - 2:37 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Milwaukee right-hander Wily Peralta can assume the major league lead in pitching victories on Thursday afternoon when the Brewers host the San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series at Miller Park. Now standing at 13 wins, Peralta has won four straight starts since he was dinged for nine runs in just 4 1/3 innings of a July 8 loss to Philadelphia. He was a 7-4 winner at St. Louis in his last start on Friday -- allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings -- and is 9-1 in his last 11 starts.
Entering Thursday, he shares the big league win lead with Clayton Kershaw, Adam Wainwright, Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello. Wainwright and Porcello will both be in action on Thursday as well.
He was 11-15 with a 4.37 earned run average in 32 starts as a full-time major leaguer last season and was seeking a boost that would have him level with those All-Star caliber names.
"That's what I've been working for," he said. "I've improved in pretty much everything. My command has been unbelievable this year, and that's something I was struggling with last year."
He faced the Giants twice in 2013 and gave up seven runs in 10 1/3 innings while the Brewers won both games.
San Francisco, which has won five of seven games since a six-game slide, started newly acquired right-hander Jake Peavy for the third time since he arrived from Boston.
He allowed no baserunners through six innings against the New York Mets in his last start on Saturday, then gave up four runs in the seventh to lose a 4-2 verdict.
His last victory came April 25 at Toronto and he's 0-11 in 17 subsequent starts.
"There are a lot of positives. I had really good command, threw the ball mostly where I want to," he said.
He faced the Brewers while with the Red Sox on April 4 and allowed two runs in six innings while getting a no-decision in a game Boston lost, 6-2.
On Wednesday, Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI, Ryan Vogelsong tossed six solid innings and the Giants beat the Brewers, 7-4. Michael Morse also knocked in three runs for the Giants. Joe Panik went 3- for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Vogelsong (7-8), coming off a complete-game performance against the Mets last Friday, allowed one run on seven hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Carlos Gomez and Khris Davis homered for the Brewers. Aramis Ramirez drove in two runs.
Yovani Gallardo (6-6) got the start for Milwaukee and gave up four runs on nine hits with four walks over four innings. He had tossed 16 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings coming into Wednesday's game.
Milwaukee was 5-2 versus the Giants last season. .
