Bailey, Reds win series vs. Indians

Aug 8, 2014 - 2:53 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Homer Bailey threw seven shutout innings for his first win in over a month and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Cleveland Indians 4-0 on Thursday.

The Reds won the last three games of the four-game series, including the final two at home, to capture the Ohio Cup for the first time since 2010.

Bailey (9-5) remained in the game after taking a line drive off the side of his head in the fifth inning and finished with eight strikeouts while giving up just four hits and a walk.

The right-hander was struck by a Jose Ramirez liner but recovered to make the throw to first base (Todd Frazier dropped the ball for an error). It was the first win for Bailey in his last six starts since he shut out the Giants in San Francisco on June 29.

After he was hit, Bailey fell to his knees and looked for the ball -- a good sign, Reds manager Bryan Price said. The team had a scare in spring training this year when closer Aroldis Chapman was hit with a line drive and needed surgery to repair a fracture over his eye.

Bailey shook his head and waved the dugout off, though trainer Paul Lessard did visit the mound.

"I think the first thing you look at is the reaction when the ball is stopped," said Price. "In that situation to see Homer immediately go look for the ball is a good sign. ... I guess he deflected it at some point to slow it down. If he wasn't able to stop the ball it would have been a significant injury."

Indians starter T.J. House (1-3) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and a walk.

"He kind of manages to find a way to stay in there even when it's not his best outing and give you a chance on a normal night," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "But I thought his stuff was a little flatter tonight than it's been."

Billy Hamilton had two hits and created Cincinnati's first run with his feet. After hitting a leadoff single in the first inning, he hustled to third base on Jay Bruce's single deep in the hole on the left side of the infield and scored when first baseman Carlos Santana threw past third trying to nab him.

Bruce advanced to third on the error and scored on Ryan Ludwick's two-out hit for a 2-0 lead.

Hamilton hit an RBI triple to the left-center field wall in the second inning to make it 3-0 but ran into the final out when he was caught off third base on the play and tagged out in a rundown.

The Reds took a 4-0 lead in the sixth after Frazier drew a leadoff walk, stole second base with two outs and scored when Kris Negron went the other way for a single to right field.

Manny Parra and Jonathan Broxton pitched the last two innings for the Reds.
