Hahn hopes to continue strong rookie season in opener with Rockies
Aug 11, 2014 - 2:42 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jesse Hahn tries to keep the San Diego Padres on track when he takes the mound Monday in the opener of a three-game series versus the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park. The Padres have won two in a row, three of four and eight of their last 11 games, and hope Hahn can continue a strong rookie campaign. Hahn, though, had a personal three-game winning streak stopped in Tuesday's 3-1 loss at Minnesota and gave up all three runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Hahn is still a dominant 7-3 with a 2.28 earned run average in 10 starts and had allowed only one run in each of his previous three outings. The right- hander and Virginia Tech product has never faced the Rockies and is 3-2 with a 2.43 ERA in five starts at Petco Park.
San Diego has won three straight and seven of eight games at home, and is 31-27 as the host this season. The club went 3-2 on a recent road trip through Minnesota and Pittsburgh, and won the last two portions of a three-game series against the Pirates, including Sunday's 8-2 victory behind a solid performance from All-Star pitcher Tyson Ross.
Ross limited the playoff-hopeful Pirates to a pair of runs in six innings to push his record to 11-10 this season. Seth Smith had a double and a triple to go along with three RBI and both Yonder Alonso and Jedd Gyorko posted two RBI. Smith cleared the bags with a three-base hit during a four-run fifth inning.
"I think it's just a matter that we're playing much better right now," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "You know, early in the season we had our problems, but we worked on them and it's paying off now."
The Padres have won all 14 series they have played at PNC Park. The last time they lost a series in Pittsburgh was in July 2000 at Three Rivers Stadium. San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera was a late scratch with a left hamstring cramp and he could return Monday.
In other team news, the Friars are expected to call up promising prospect Rymer Liriano in time for Monday's game. The outfielder was hitting a combined .292 this season with 14 home runs and 66 RBI between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso. He missed all of last season after recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery.
Colorado opened a six-game road trip by losing two of three matchups against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but recorded a 5-3 win in 10 innings Sunday.
Corey Dickerson hit a solo home run with two out in the top of the 10th and Wilin Rosario later followed with an RBI single for the Rockies, winners for just the second time in the past 10 tries. Rosario and Ban Paulsen also homered and Brandon Barnes recorded three hits in the win.
Paulsen was recalled from Triple-A Colorado before the game after outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list.
Matt Belisle got the win in relief and LaTroy Hawkins posted his 18th save with three strikeouts in the bottom of the 10th. Rockies starting pitcher Franklin Morales gave up three runs -- two earned -- in six innings.
"It wasn't easy for him today," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss of Morales. "He lived on the edge for most of the outing."
Jordan Lyles will take the mound for Weiss Monday and is 6-1 with a 3.72 earned run average. Lyles took the mound in Wednesday's 13-4 rout of the Chicago Cubs and needed the run support after allowing four runs in six innings. It was Lyles' first appearance since June 4 versus Arizona.
Lyles, a right-hander, is 2-0 in seven road assignments and only 1-3 with a 6.93 ERA in five career starts against the Padres. Lyles has faced San Diego twice this season, going 0-1 across 8 1/3 innings with nine runs and 11 hits allowed.
Colorado is 6-4 against San Diego this season.
