Padres try to stay on winning track against Rockies
Aug 12, 2014 - 3:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres have the best record in the National League since the All-Star break at 14-8 and look for a series win over the Colorado Rockies Tuesday at Petco Park. The Padres defeated the Rockies, 4-3, in Monday's opener of a three-game series thanks to Yangervis Solarte's go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning. Yonder Alonso also homered for San Diego, which has won three straight and nine of the last 12 games.
Outfield prospect Rymer Liriano had a sacrifice fly in his MLB debut after being promoted earlier Monday from Triple-A El Paso.
Nick Vincent got the win with two scoreless innings of relief and starter Jesse Hahn allowed three runs in the first five innings. Joaquin Benoit posted his sixth save with three strikeouts in the ninth inning.
"The bullpen has been really solid all year. It really has," Padres manager Bud Black said. "There are a lot of guys under the radar who are not known nationally but who are looked at in the industry."
San Diego's bullpen leads the majors with a 2.30 earned run average.
The Padres have won four straight and eight of nine games at home, and will send rookie Odrisamer Despaigne to the mound Tuesday. Despaigne is 2-3 with a 3.10 ERA and is winless (0-3) in his last six starts. He did not factor in the outcome of a 5-4 win at Minnesota last Wednesday and gave up four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Despaigne, a right-hander, will face Colorado for the first time and is 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA in four starts at Petco Park.
Colorado has lost 12 of its last 15 games and blew a 3-1 lead last night.
Boone Logan was dealt the loss for allowing Solarte's home run and starter Jordan Lyles gave up a pair of runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Corey Dickerson belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Justin Morneau had two of the five hits for the Rockies.
"They came in and absolutely shut us down. They took complete control of that game late," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Yohan Flande draws the start for the Rockies Tuesday and is still searching for the first win of his career. He is 0-4 with a 5.77 earned run average in seven games (6 starts) and allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings of a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.
Flande, a left-hander, has never faced the Padres and is 0-2 on the road this season in three appearances (2 starts). The Rockies have lost each of Flande's seven outings this season.
Colorado is 6-5 against San Diego this season.
