Padres take down Rockies
Aug 13, 2014 - 6:38 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Odrisamer Despaigne pitched seven innings of five-hit ball as the San Diego Padres took a 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in the second of three games.Despaigne (3-3) also walked two while striking out eight for the Padres, who have won four straight and eight of 10. Chris Nelson drove in two while Abraham Almonte and Alexi Amarista each had an RBI.
"He was really sharp today with his off-speed pitches," said San Diego manager Bud Black about Despaigne. "But pitchers have to base their games off their fastballs and he did a really good job with that today."
Yohan Flande (0-5) was touched for two runs on four hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts over six innings for the Rockies, who have lost five of their last six games. Corey Dickerson homered in the ninth to break up the shutout.
"We had a couple of opportunities early," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "We didn't get the big hit. You have to play a clean game, especially here, where it's always going to be tough to score runs."
The Padres scored the first run of the game in the second when Amarista hit into a fielder's choice that scored Yonder Alonso for a 1-0 lead.
Dickerson singled to center in the fourth with men on first and second, but Justin Morneau was thrown out at home and Wilin Rosario lined out to end the inning.
In the home fourth, back-to-back singles from Rymer Liriano and Yasmani Grandal left runners at the corners before Almonte lofted a sacrifice fly to left for a 2-0 advantage.
The Rockies stranded runners on second and third in the sixth and Nelson and Tommy Medica both went into the stands to grab Colorado pop fouls in the eighth.
Nelson's two-run single in the eighth gave the Padres a 4-0 lead.
Dickerson homered with one out in the ninth off of Dale Thayer, his third straight game with a home run.
