Asche leads Phillies past Giants in 10
Aug 16, 2014 - 7:02 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cody Asche tied the game with a homer in the eighth, then scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning to help the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. With the Phillies down two in the eighth and a runner on, Asche lifted a towering drive to left that knotted the game at 3-3.
The Philadelphia third baseman then led off the 10th with a double off of Santiago Casilla (1-3) and later scored when Chase Utley was plunked by Javier Lopez with the bases loaded. Ryan Howard followed with a long sacrifice fly to left that gave the visitors an insurance run.
"Coming in today seeing my name in the lineup definitely gave me a little boost of confidence," said Asche. "I was confident going into tonight because I was in there."
Ken Giles (2-0) got the win after working two innings in relief of starter Cole Hamels, who was charged with three runs on nine hits over seven innings in the no-decision. The left-hander hadn't allowed more than one run in his previous five starts, a span dating back to July 12 in a loss to Washington.
Jonathan Papelbon came on in the home half of the 10th to record his 28th save of the season. Papelbon moved into sole possession of fifth place on the Phillies all-time saves list, passing Tug McGraw with his 95th save as a Phil.
Philadelphia snapped its three-game losing streak.
Hamels and Madison Bumgarner went toe-to-toe early, and San Francisco's southpaw hadn't allowed a hit until the fourth.
Jimmy Rollins recorded that first hit and Utley followed with a single to left. Rollins was then caught stealing third when Bumgarner stepped off the mound and tossed over for the out. Philadelphia challenged the call, but the ruling was upheld. Howard struck out to end the inning.
A single by Buster Posey and a ground-rule double by Pablo Sandoval put a pair of runners in scoring position to open the fourth. Michael Morse followed with his 16th homer of the season to give the Giants an early 3-0 lead.
Marlon Byrd got one back in the fifth with a solo blast to left and that would be all the Phillies would get until Bumgarner exited.
Jeremy Affeldt came on for Bumgarner in the eighth and Philadelphia took advantage. Darin Ruf singled on a grounder deflected by a diving Sandoval at third, then Asche poked his eighth homer of the season to tie the game at 3-3. Affeldt settled down from there to set the Phillies down in order.
"No question it's disheartening," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "This is a tough one. We had a lot of them here at home, I couldn't tell you why."
With Sandoval on second and two outs in the home eighth, Joe Panik laced a single to right, where Byrd came up firing to get Sandoval by several feet at home to end the frame.
Game Notes
The home run Affeldt allowed was the first all season and the first to a left- hander since April 24, 2011 to Atlanta's Jason Heyward ... Bumgarner surrendered just one run on four hits and struck out nine over seven innings ... Philadelphia went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded six on base ... San Francisco, which has lost six of its last seven, went 3- for-8 with RISP.
