Angels capitalize on errors, beat Red Sox

Aug 19, 2014 - 3:00 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - C.J. Wilson pitched into the sixth inning and the Angels capitalized on a pair of errors in the eighth to down the Boston Red Sox, 4-2, to begin a four-game series.

Mike Trout went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored once for the Angels, who have won five of their last six contests and are a half-game ahead of Oakland for first place in the AL West.

Wilson (10-8) allowed five hits and a run, but tied a season-high with five walks to go with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Wilson snapped a streak of seven straight road starts without a win. This was his first road victory since April 25 at Yankee Stadium.

Kevin Jepsen pitched the ninth for his first save of the year.

Brandon Workman (1-7) surrendered six hits and a pair of runs over seven frames, but lost his seventh straight start.

Brock Holt had an RBI single for Boston, which split a four-game series against Houston Fenway Park over the weekend.

Ahead 2-1 entering the eighth, the Angels widened their lead when reliever Junichi Tazawa committed two errors on one play. Tazawa, who threw 33 pitches in the inning, walked Chris Iannetta to start the frame and then gave up a double to Kole Calhoun. After striking out Trout, Tazawa intentionally walked Albert Pujols.

Howie Kendrick then sent a bouncer that caromed off Tazawa's glove and leg. He recovered, but threw home wide and the ball hit off a sliding Iannetta, allowing two runs to come in.

"Unfortunately, what looked like a potential inning-ending double play turned into a couple of runs for them," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

Pujols slid home safely on a chopper off the bat of Erick Aybar when Dustin Pedroia's throw to the plate was high, but the Red Sox challenged the call, which was reversed.

Yoenis Cespedes bounced into a fielder's choice to plate Holt in the ninth, just after Jepsen fanned David Ortiz with men at the corners.

"That's a great pitch," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of the change-up that Oritz missed. "It's obviously a tough situation. David can beat you in any variety in this ball park."

Mike Napoli flied out to center to end the game.

Trout's double to center scored Calhoun in the third and Pujols followed with a single for a 2-0 game.

Holt's single to left scored Mookie Betts in the fourth.
