Giants hope to make up some ground at Wrigley
Aug 19, 2014 - 3:04 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants are looking to regain traction in the National League playoff race. And a visit to Wrigley Field might be just the ticket. The Giants open a six-game road trip on Tuesday night when they head to Chicago for game one of a three-game series with the host Cubs.
San Francisco won the final two games of a homestand against Philadelphia and sits 3 1/2 games off the pace of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL's West Division.
Michael Morse went 6-for-6 in the two wins.
"I'm just getting hits now. I'm not trying to do too much, just get a pitch to hit," he said. "I'm not seeing the ball any better, I'm being more patient."
The Giants have won five of their last six games at Wrigley Field and also beat the Cubs in two of three games during their late May visit to California.
San Francisco didn't allow a run on the final 20 innings of the series.
Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong can continue that streak with a start on Tuesday.
He's 2-0 with a 1.60 earned run average in his last three starts and has held his opposition to a .160 batting average. He got a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox in his last start on Tuesday, but allowed just two runs on three hits in seven innings.
In six starts at Wrigley, he's 3-3 with a 6.91 ERA.
Chicago enters the series after a four-game stint against the New York Mets in which its pitchers allowed 16 hits in 34 innings, which translates to a .140 bating average. It was the first time in 31 years in which it held a foe to four hits or fewer in four straight games.
It's never done it in five consecutive games.
Rookie Tsuyoshi Wade is unbeaten in his last four starts, winning two decisions with a 2.49 ERA. In his last outing on Wednesday, he held the Milwaukee Brewers to two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 4-2 win.
On Monday, Anthony Rizzo hit a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth inning and the Cubs beat the punchless Mets, 4-1, to wrap up their four-game series.
The Cubs, who won the last two games of the series, got a two-run homer from rookie slugger Javier Baez on Monday and seven strong innings from Kyle Hendricks in his fourth straight win.
On Sunday, Brandon Crawford drove in two runs as the Giants grabbed a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a three-game series.
Michael Morse went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the Giants, who have won three of their last four.
"He's getting his timing back. He's a good hitter," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Tim Lincecum (10-8) pitched five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts to win his first game since July 11.
