Greinke aims to put elbow issues behind him
Aug 23, 2014 - 1:22 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Greinke's elbow is barking. The Los Angeles Dodgers are hoping a few extra days of rest will help. He he gets the call on Saturday when the Dodgers continue a three-game set with the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium.Greinke hasn't pitched since last Friday against Milwaukee when he tossed five scoreless innings in a no-decision. He's lost four of his last five decisions, though, and is 12-8 with a 2.75 ERA on the year.
"I haven't pitched that great lately," Greinke said. "I don't know if that's had much to do with it or not. But I felt fine, like I told you guys, after starts. I just haven't pitched as good. It could be a lot of things."
Greinke has compared the discomfort in the elbow to what he felt in spring training last season. He went on to make 28 starts in 2013.
"Nothing wrong with the ligament," Greinke said. "It's just something that comes and goes. I can't guarantee it will be good from here on out, but I don't plan on having any issues with it."
Greinke has faced the Mets three times and is 1-1 against them with a 2.84 ERA.
New York will counter with impressive rookie Jacob de Grom, who has been sidelined with rotator cuff tendinitis. The right-hander hasn't pitched since Aug.7 when he gave up three runs in six innings in a no decision against the Washington Nationals.
He's 5-0 with a 1.55 ERA in his past six starts and is 6-5 on the year with a 2.87 ERA.
Los Angeles continued its recent mastery of the Mets on Friday, as Dan Haren tossed seven strong innings and drove in a run to help the Dodgers to a 6-2, win.
Haren (11-10) surrendered just one run on three hits with six strikeouts for the win. Dee Gordon tripled among his three hits and drove in a run and Matt Kemp hit a two-run double for the Dodgers, who have won three of four overall.
"Dan had depth tonight. He located and got the ball where he wanted it," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Offensively, we had an attack all night long."
Curtis Granderson homered and Lucas Duda hit a sacrifice fly for the Mets, who have lost 12 of their last 14 games against the Dodgers. Jonathan Niese (7-9) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and three walks across 6 2/3 frames.
"We just couldn't make the plays," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "We had a rough night."
