Yankees resume playoff push in finale with White Sox

Aug 24, 2014 - 2:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Caught in a run of 13 games in as many days, the New York Yankees aim to close out a three-game home set against the Chicago White Sox on a positive note Sunday afternoon.

The Yankees have show signs of life of late, winning three in a row and five of the last seven, thanks to a 5-3 victory on Saturday versus the Sox at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Now seven games out of first in the American League East, with division- leading Baltimore having lost back-to-back decisions, the Yankees are hoping to build on their effort yesterday when Carlos Beltran connected on his 15th home run of the season and scored a pair of runs.

Martin Prado was responsible for three of the seven hits by the Yankees, plating a pair with a couple of doubles.

"I've just been doing the same thing I've been doing my whole career," said Prado. "If there's somebody that works hard before the game, that's me. ... It was a team win and it was a team effort. That's all we're looking for every day."

New York starter Hiroki Kuroda notched his ninth win of the campaign as he allowed two runs on five hits and a couple of walks, striking out six over as many innings. David Robertson stepped in during the ninth for his 34th save of the season.

"The fact that I was able to keep the game close to give my team a chance, I'm really proud of that," Kuroda said through an interpreter. "To get a win is the biggest thing for me today."

Scott Carroll was saddled with the loss for Chicago, giving up seven hits and five runs -- four earned -- while walking three without the benefit of a single strikeout in six innings.

Jose Abreu picked up two hits for the visitors, while Alejandro De Aza, Conor Gillaspie and Jordan Danks each had a hit and a run scored as the White Sox lost their fifth in a row and the sixth in seven tries.

After being pushed beyond the limit on Monday, Chris Sale hopes to have an easier time of it this afternoon when he goes up against the Yankees in the Bronx.

The last time out the left-hander lasted only six innings versus Baltimore, throwing 121 pitches before exiting and being charged with his third loss of the campaign. Sale gave up three runs on eight hits -- two home runs -- and a couple of walks while striking out eight.

Sale, who is 3-0 in his career versus the Yankees, faced New York back in May and surrendered just a single hit and struck out 10 in six shutout innings.

Former Boston hurler Chris Capuano is set to counter for the Yankees today. The left-hander, who has a 1-0 record in his career against Chicago, was primarily used out of the bullpen by the Red Sox, but a crumbling starting rotation for New York has given him a new set of responsibilities.

On Tuesday Capuano went up against Houston at home and allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out eight over 5 1/3 innings, but he again failed to figure into a decision for the third time in five tries with his new club.
