Black earns 600th win as Padres avoid sweep
Aug 25, 2014 - 6:03 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBI, as the San Diego Padres avoided a sweep with a 7-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Will Venable clubbed a pinch-hit, two-run homer for the Padres, who snapped a three-game losing streak and finished their road trip at 3-7.
San Diego starter Ian Kennedy (10-11) gave up three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Joaquin Benoit pitched a perfect ninth to seal Bud Black's 600th managerial win, all with the Padres.
Rookie Chase Anderson (7-6) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on six hits in five innings for Arizona, which had lost six straight before winning the first two games of this series.
Anderson walked Kennedy and Yangervis Solarte to begin the fifth. After getting Rymer Liriano to ground into a double play, he walked Seth Smith before serving up Grandal's homer to right field.
"I just lost feel in that fifth inning, I can't really tell you why," Anderson said.
The blast extended San Diego's lead to 5-0, but Arizona came right back in the bottom of the fifth.
Kennedy loaded the bases on two singles and a walk after retiring the first two batters. Miguel Montero knocked in a pair with a base hit to center field.
In the sixth, Ender Inciarte doubled home Jake Lamb with two outs to trim Arizona's deficit to 5-3.
"They battled back, put some stress on us. It wasn't easy," Black said.
Padres reliever Dale Thayer stranded men on the corners in the seventh, and Venable provided some breathing room with his eighth-inning blast.
Cliff Pennington came off the bench and hit a solo shot off Thayer in the home eighth.
San Diego jumped on Arizona early with two first-inning runs. Both Solarte and Liriano were in scoring position after opening the game with consecutive singles and advancing on a passed ball. Smith had an RBI groundout and Grandal hit a sacrifice fly.
Game Notes
Arizona still leads the season series 8-4 ... Aaron Hill and David Peralta both had two hits for the D-backs ... Arizona traded Kennedy to San Diego at last year's deadline.
