Phillies earn series win over first-place Nats
Aug 27, 2014 - 5:21 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Ruiz's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning drove in Ben Revere with the deciding run as the Philadelphia Phillies downed the Washington Nationals, 4-3, on Tuesday. The Phillies have taken the first two games of this seemingly lopsided NL East set and have won three straight series for the first time in over a year.
Revere was originally called out on a groundout to short leading off the eighth, but replay showed Ian Desmond's throw pulled Kevin Frandsen's foot off the first-base bag.
Revere stole second, moved to third on a flyout and scored without a throw on Ruiz's deep fly to center field.
Jonathan Papelbon worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 33rd save, while Ken Giles (3-1) earned the win by striking out the side in the eighth after Cole Hamels gave up a game-tying solo homer to Asdrubal Cabrera.
Hamels was otherwise solid in allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk.
Freddy Galvis went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and Darin Ruf added a solo blast for the victors.
Gio Gonzalez surrendered both home runs after only allowing two over his previous 12 starts. He was charged with three runs on six hits as his winless streak ran to nine straight outings.
"(Gonzalez) kept us in it," Nationals manager Matt Williams said of his starter. "Just made a couple of mistakes."
Hamels cruised through six innings before finding trouble in the seventh. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, and Wilson Ramos and Frandsen hit consecutive one-out RBI singles to bring the Nationals within a run at 3-2.
Hamels escaped with the lead intact, but Cabrera evened things an inning later.
When Galvis stepped to the plate in the fifth inning he was hitting .044 (2- for-45), but he looked every bit a slugger when he clubbed a letter-high fastball into the left-field seats.
Grady Sizemore had triple to deep center prior to Galvis' first home run of the year, and Ruf added his third to left-center an inning later.
"I just wanted to be aggressive," Ruf said. "Good things happen when that happens."
