Yanks ride big inning to win over Blue Jays
Aug 30, 2014 - 6:16 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run homer to cap a five-run seventh inning that powered the New York Yankees to a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.Chris Capuano (2-3) started Friday's series opener for New York and earned his first win with the club. The veteran lefty allowed three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and walked one in 6 1/3 innings.
"I'm really happy to get a win," said Capuano. "I was just focusing on making pitches."
Toronto starter Mark Buehrle (11-9) held the Yankees scoreless through the first six innings, but left without recording an out in the seventh.
"He was good tonight," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Buehrle. "We really couldn't get any offense going."
Brian McCann opened the decisive frame with a double and Carlos Beltran followed with a walk. McCann came around on Brett Gardner's double to right field, tying the game at 1-1, and an errant throw by Steve Tolleson on the relay to third base allowed Beltran to score the go-ahead run.
An infield single by Ichiro Suzuki ended the outing for Buehrle, who fell to 1-13 in his career against the Yankees. He has lost 11 consecutive decisions dating back to 2004.
New York went up 3-1 when catcher Dioner Navarro tied to pick Gardner off at third and fired his throw into left field. Ellsbury then hit a bullet to right off Aaron Loup.
Toronto got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh. Kevin Pillar, who made a spectacular diving catch to end the fourth, hit an RBI double and Melky Cabrera supplied a sacrifice fly off Adam Warren after Jose Reyes reached on a Derek Jeter throwing error.
Warren then hit Jose Bautista with a pitch, but got Edwin Encarnacion to fly out to right to end the inning.
Chase Headley made it 6-3 with a home run to right-center field to begin the ninth.
David Robertson recorded the final four outs for his 35th save of the season.
Bautista homered in a third straight game for the Blue Jays. He belted a Capuano pitch to the second deck in left in the fourth.
Game Notes
Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka will head back to New York with soreness in his pitching arm. He has been trying to return from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow without undergoing Tommy John surgery.
