Walker's HR lifts Pirates over Reds
Aug 30, 2014 - 10:58 PM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Neil Walker hit a three-run homer in the first inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates held on for a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.Vance Worley (6-4) snapped a three-start losing streak after giving up two runs -- one earned -- on three hits in 6 1/3 innings for the Pirates, who have won the first two games of this three-game series and four straight overall.
Todd Frazier hit a solo home run and Alfredo Simon (13-9) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in seven innings for the Reds.
With one out in the first inning, Andrew Lambo singled and Andrew McCutchen followed with a walk. Walker then blasted his 18th home run of the season to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.
The Reds got on the board in the fourth as Frazier belted his 23rd home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center, to make it 3-1.
In the seventh, Cincinnati made it a one-run game. Devin Mesoraco was hit by a pitch, Brayan Pena singled and Zack Cozart brought home Mesoraco as his pop-up to shallow right was misplayed by Ike Davis for a 3-2 contest.
Tony Watson pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, while Mark Melancon did the same in the ninth to pick up his 26th save of the season.
Game Notes
Despite the loss, the Reds still lead the season-series, 9-6 ... Worley moved to 2-1 in five games against the Reds.
