Orioles hold off Reds
Sep 3, 2014 - 5:59 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Schoop's solo home run turned out to be the game-winner as the Baltimore Orioles took a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds to open a three-game set.Nelson Cruz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Orioles, who have won five of six. Bud Norris (12-8) pitched six scoreless innings and allowed four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts to pick up the win.
"That was pretty impressive," O's manager Buck Showalter said of Norris.
Jay Bruce's grand slam in the eighth inning accounted for the offense for the Reds, who have lost three of four. Mat Latos (5-4) allowed five runs on 10 hits over five innings to take the loss.
"I felt really good coming out of the pen. Mother Nature must have snuck up on us again. It's the second time this has happened to me in two away games," Latos said of pitching following a rain delay.
After two rain delays, the Orioles went on top in the first inning. Nick Markakis singled and Alejandro De Aza followed with a single. Two batters later, Cruz singled to bring in a run, and Chris Davis followed with an RBI single.
Jimmy Paredes then grounded out to bring home another run, and Caleb Joseph followed with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
Schoop led off the second inning with his 13th home run of the season for a 5-0 lead.
Norris stranded men at first and third in the third, and left men at first and second in the fifth.
Tommy Hunter pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, but Darren O'Day got into trouble in the eighth.
Billy Hamilton walked to lead off and Brandon Phillips reached base on a bad throw from Paredes. After Devin Mesoraco was hit by a pitch, Bruce launched a pitch over the wall in right for a 5-4 lead.
Zach Britton came on to close the game in the ninth and got the first out before giving up a double to Ramon Santiago followed by an infield single to Hamilton. Todd Frazier, though, hit a grounder to second that was fielded by Schoop, who applied the tag to Santiago then threw to first to end the game.
