Kluber hopes to end slide in clash with White Sox
Sep 6, 2014 - 1:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - It's not been the best time for a career-worst losing streak.Cleveland ace Corey Kluber will try to end a three-start skid on Saturday night when the Indians host the Chicago White Sox in game two of a three-game series at Progressive Field.
He's posted a 4.50 earned run average in losing three in a row for the first time in his career, and he was ripped for five runs in just 2 2/3 innings of a 12-1 loss to Detroit in his last outing on Monday.
Manager Terry Francona pulled him after 57 pitches with the Indians down, 5-1.
Kluber has faced the White Sox four times this season and is 1-1 with a 3.25 ERA, allowing six hits in 13 at-bats to Chicago rookie slugger Jose Abreu, who's in the midst of a 14-game hit streak in which he's batting .510 with 10 runs batted in and a pair of home runs.
The Indians are six games back of first-place Kansas City in the American League's Central Division after winning Friday's opener. David Murphy came off the disabled list earlier in the day, then drove in the winning run with a 10th-inning single.
"You never figure that you'd be in that situation, but those are the most fun in baseball," Murphy said.
Chicago starts lefty Jose Quintana, who's been particular effective against a number of Cleveland hitters, including Yan Gomes and Lonnie Chisenhall, who are a combined 0-for-14 against him. Neither Jason Kipnis nor Michael Bourn played Friday against White Sox southpaw Chris Sale.
Quintana is 3-0 in eight lifetime starts against the Indians and won his lone decision in three starts against them this season. In two career trips to Progressive Field, however, Quintana has a pair of no-decisions and the White Sox are 0-2.
Chicago had lost five straight Quintana starts before he allowed two runs in seven innings of a 6-2 win over Detroit on Sunday.
On Friday, Murphy's RBI lifted the Indians to a 2-1 victory.
Gomes led off with a triple to left field off Maikel Cleto (0-1). Michael Taylor went full bore into the wall while trying to make the catch. The bases were then loaded as the next two batters were intentionally walked. Eric Surkamp struck out Kipnis swinging before Ronald Belisario served up Murphy's liner that dropped in front of center fielder Adam Eaton.
