Freshly-signed De La Rosa goes for Rox vs. Padres

Sep 6, 2014 - 2:42 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Fresh off signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Colorado Rockies through 2016, Jorge De La Rosa gets the call Saturday in the middle portion of a three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Coors Field.

De La Rosa officially signed a new deal Friday and will be paid $12.5 million per season. He is 13-10 with a 4.26 earned run average, but has lost two straight and four of his last six starts. In 21 career games (17 starts) against the Padres, De La Rosa is 8-3 with a 4.47 earned run average.

The left-hander has won six straight starts at home and is 9-2 with a 3.19 ERA in 13 starts at Coors Field.

"He actually prefers to pitch here," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "There's a short list of guys who can actually say that ... He should be the poster child for this place as a pitcher."

Colorado has won two in a row and four of its last six games, and opened this series versus San Diego with Friday's 3-0 win. Drew Stubbs and Nolan Arenado both homered to back an outstanding performance from starting pitcher Tyler Matzek, who tossed a three-hit shutout.

Matzek, who registered his first career shutout, struck out six batters and walked one. Matzek fired 75 of his 103 pitches for strikes.

"We're seeing the kid getting better and better," Weiss said of Matzek. "His last three (starts) have been very good."

The Padres have lost three in a row and four of their last six games. Eric Stults was on the losing end of another decision and fell to 6-16 on the season after he gave up all three runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Abraham Almonte had two of San Diego's three hits in defeat.

San Diego will try to even this series with Joe Wieland on the hill and he hasn't pitched in the majors since 2012, when he was 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA in five starts. The right-hander, who underwent Tommy John surgery, last toed the rubber on May 6, 2012 versus Miami at Petco Park.

Wieland has never faced the Rockies in his career.

The Padres swept a three-game series against the Rockies from Aug. 11-13 at Petco Park.
