Gonzalez powers Dodgers past D-backs

Sep 8, 2014 - 12:15 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adrian Gonzalez clubbed a pair of three- run homers to spark the Los Angeles Dodgers to another win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, this one a 7-2 decision that finished off a three-game sweep.

After failing to record a hit off Arizona's Trevor Cahill through five innings of play, the Dodgers erased a 2-0 deficit with a big sixth highlighted by Gonzalez's first homer of the day.

Gonzalez went deep again in the seventh, with Matt Kemp tacking on a solo homer to help Los Angeles to its 15th victory in 19 meetings with the D-backs this season.

"I'm just trying to get quality at-bats," said Gonzalez. "It's about winning games."

Zack Greinke (14-8) earned the win by allowing two runs over six innings of work.

Cahill (3-11) permitted just two hits over 5 2/3 frames, but walked four and was dealt the loss after serving up Gonzalez's first three-run shot.

Cody Ross collected three of Arizona's six hits, including an RBI single.

The Dodgers had managed just three baserunners in all prior to finally breaking through against Cahill in the sixth.

Dee Gordon broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff double and Hanley Ramirez drew a walk before Gonzalez hammered a sinker over the center-field wall to put Los Angeles in front.

"I felt good the first couple of innings, then everything fell apart," said Cahill. "I fell behind to Adrian and I put a sinker over the plate. He put a good swing on it."

Gonzalez struck again an inning later, following a walk to Gordon and an Arizona error with a blast off Oliver Perez that cleared the fence in left center and extended the lead to 6-2.

Kemp then made it a five-run cushion by crushing Perez's next pitch into the seats.

Greinke had some struggles early on, surrendering consecutive singles to Miguel Montero, Ross and Jake Lamb that loaded the bases with none out in the second. Montero was thrown out by Kemp trying to score on Alfredo Marte's fly ball to right, but Didi Gregorius was able to plate Ross by legging out a chopper in front of the plate.

A pair of walks issued by Greinke in the third enabled the Diamondbacks to increase the margin via Ross' two-out RBI single to right.

"Zack's stuff was good," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "A little wild early, but he continued to make pitches."
