Tillman tries to get O's closer to division title versus Red Sox
Sep 9, 2014 - 2:54 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Having gone nearly two months without a loss, Chris Tillman will try to get the Baltimore Orioles a little closer to an American League East title on Tuesday evening in the second contest of a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox.The Orioles have won each of Chris Tillman's last eight starts and the right- hander himself has not lost in 10 starts since a setback on July 12, going 4-0 with a 2.10 earned run average. He has not factored into the decision of past two outings, including Thursday versus Cincinnati.
Tillman allowed three runs -- the most he has given up in seven starts -- over six innings against the Reds, striking out six. He remained 11-5 on the year with a 3.40 earned run average.
Tillman is 5-3 lifetime versus the Red Sox with a 2.76 ERA.
Anthony Ranaudo will make his fifth career start tonight for Boston and it will come on his 25th birthday.
Ranaudo opened his major league career with three straight winning starts, a trio of six-inning outings -- before taking a loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The rookie right-hander yielded three runs on six hits and two walks over 5 1/3 frames, lifting his season ERA to 4.63.
The Orioles took Monday's opener 4-0, their 11th victory in 15 games and lowered their magic number to clinch the division to 11.
"It's just a step. Every night you get an opportunity to take a step towards your goal," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter.
Miguel Gonzalez teamed with four relievers in a seven-hit shutout, scattering six hits -- all singles -- and three walks over 6 1/3 innings.
Nelson Cruz continued his hot hitting by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Baltimore. Steve Pearce also had a pair of hits, including an RBI single.
Joe Kelly was dealt the loss after being reached for four runs -- three earned -- in 6 1/3 innings of work.
"I thought he threw the ball really well," Boston catcher David Ross said about Kelly. "A couple walks came back to bite us and we didn't play great defense behind him."
Boston lost for the fourth time in six games.
The Orioles have won six of their last eight versus the Red Sox and lead the season series 8-6.
