Galvis, Phillies nip Pirates
Sep 10, 2014 - 4:36 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Freddy Galvis homered and scored a career-high three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies took down the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, 4-3, in the second installment of this four-game series. With the scored tied at 3-3, Galvis reached on an infield single to start the seventh inning against Justin Wilson (3-4). After consecutive strikeouts, he stole second and scored the eventual game-winning run when rookie Maikel Franco slapped a single past a diving Ike Davis and into right field.
Galvis, who finished a triple shy of the cycle and stole his first bag of the season, started at shortstop for Jimmy Rollins. Rollins is day-to-day with a hamstring injury.
Chase Utley and starting pitcher David Buchanan drove in a run apiece for Philadelphia, winners in five of its last six home games.
Buchanan gave up three runs -- two earned -- while striking out five in six innings of work. Justin De Fratus (3-1) pitched around two hits in the seventh inning, Ken Giles tossed a clean eighth and Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 36th save.
"You never want to come out of a game, obviously ... but being here, with the bullpen the way it is, you're pretty confident it's shut down from then on," Buchanan said.
Russell Martin had two hits and two RBI for the Pirates, who got six innings of three-run ball out of starter Edinson Volquez.
"They threw their pitches and we just missed them," said Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen. "They did their job, did what they were supposed to do. We just didn't do ours."
Utley put the Phillies on the board with his RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, and Jordy Mercer tied it with a run-scoring double a half inning later.
Galvis doubled off the wall in right in the home second and came in when Buchanan ripped a grounder up the middle for his second RBI of the season.
The Pirates took their only lead in the top of the third, when walks to Starling Marte and Neil Walker led to Martin's two-run double.
The score held until Galvis led off the fifth inning with a no-doubter to the seats in right field.
