Minus Wright, Mets conclude set with Rockies

Sep 10, 2014 - 2:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A long shot chase for the postseason isn't getting any easier for the New York Mets.

The Mets announced that third baseman David Wright will be shelved for the rest of the season with a shoulder problem, but they'll nonetheless continue the quest with the finale of a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.

New York has won six of its last seven games amid an offensive surge -- in which it's hitting .290 as a team -- to climb within 5 1/2 games of the second National League wild card playoff position. The Mets trail Pittsburgh, which now holds the slot, and is also behind Milwaukee, Atlanta and Miami.

Wright's absence is thanks to inflammation in his left shoulder that will be addressed with rest and a subsequent strengthening regimen. In 11 games this season that Wright has already missed, the Mets are 4-7. He had two hits in Monday's series opener, but did not play in Tuesday's game, which New York won, 2-0.

"Just a really good team win right there," second baseman Daniel Murphy said. "A little bit of a sour taste in your mouth with what's going on with David."

Colorado starts red-hot left-hander Tyler Matzek, a first-round draft pick five years ago who's won his last three starts while posting a sub-1.00 earned run average. In five previous starts, all losses, his ERA was an ugly 8.06.

Matzek is working on a 21-inning scoreless streak, a record for Rockies rookies.

"I feel like I was finding my groove in the last two or three games," Matzek said. "Definitely feeling good. Just everything's working: fastball location, slider, changeup, curveball. Everything feels right, right now."

He was a 3-0 winner over San Diego in his last start on Friday, when he became the first rookie in franchise history to throw a shutout at Coors Field.

In the five starts in which he's pitched seven innings, he's 5-0 with a 0.97 ERA.

"We're seeing a kid get better and better with just about every start," manager Walt Weiss said. "I've talked about his poise and maturity and he continues to show that. And he continues to show a very good slider. You saw left-handed hitters and right-handed hitters taking some funny swings at that thing."

Colorado is 5-30 in its last 35 road games, but two of the wins were Matzek's.

New York goes with rookie righty Rafael Montero, who as recalled for a spot start from Triple-A Las Vegas.

He was 6-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 18 minor-league starts before the call-up.

On Tuesday, Jacob deGrom pitched a career-high eight scoreless innings to lead the Mets.

DeGrom (8-6) held the highest-scoring team in the National League to just three hits, walked none and struck out nine for the Mets, who have won five of six. The right-hander retired the final 14 batters he faced and now has not allowed an earned run in 22 consecutive innings. Juan Lagares and Curtis Granderson each supplied New York with an RBI.

Christian Bergman (2-3) was saddled with the loss after going six innings and allowing two runs on six hits.
