Yanks, O's play two at Camden Yards

Sep 12, 2014 - 1:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees' chances of reaching the postseason might be slim, but don't tell them that. After two remarkable come from behind wins, the Yankees try to keep their faint playoff hopes alive on Friday with a day/night doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

The Orioles, meanwhile, are likely headed to the postseason for the second time in three years and come into Friday's contest holding a 10-game lead in the American League East with a magic number of eight to clinch the division.

Baltimore hasn't celebrated a division title on home turf since 1969 and will play its next 10 games at Camden Yards.

"If there comes a day where that is the day that something like that we could be fortunate enough to have it happen, then we can talk about it," O's manager Buck Showalter said, "but we've got a lot of roads to cross there."

Baltimore has won four in a row and seven of its last nine after sweeping the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees, who are 10 1/2 games back of the O's, managed to gain some ground in the wild card race on Thursday, as they once again rallied from a four-run deficit against Tampa Bay and claimed a 5-4 win thanks to Chris Young's game- winning three-run home run.

Young had also broken up Alex Cobb's no-hit bid an inning earlier.

"It was amazing," Young said. "You feel like you're floating on a cloud."

Time, though, is starting to run out for the Yankees, who still have four teams to jump if they want to land one of the two wild card spots in the AL.

"Guys need to step up, that's the bottom line," said manager Joe Girardi. "I've said all along, it takes more than 25 guys to win and get into the playoffs. I'm not sure what it's been for us but I know it's a lot. It's not what you want, but it's what it is and you've got to deal with it."

Getting the call for New York in the opener will be righty Brandon McCarthy, who is 6-4 with a 2.79 ERA since being acquired from Arizona. McCarthy, though, won for just the second time in his last six starts on Saturday against Kansas City, as he held the Royals to a pair of runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The Yanks will then rely on righty Bryan Mitchell in the nightcap. Mitchell has made one big league appearance out of the bullpen and pitched two scoreless innings against Cleveland in that one.

Baltimore will send Kevin Gausman to the hill in game one, as he tries for his first win since Aug. 17. Gausman has lost his last three decisions, but did not get one against Tampa Bay on Saturday, as he allowed two runs and five hits with four walks in seven innings of his team's 3-2 loss.

He is 7-7 on the year with a 3.83 ERA.

Bud Norris will get the call in the second game. Norris did not get a decision on Sunday against the Rays, but was not sharp, as he allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings of a 7-5 win. He is 12-8 on the season with a 3.92 ERA.

Norris, though, has beaten the Yankees both times he has faced them and has pitched to a 3.60 ERA in the process.

Baltimore is 8-3 versus the Yankees this season.
