Dodgers, Kershaw hope to pad NL West lead in finale with Giants
Sep 14, 2014 - 1:15 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers put on quite an offensive display on Saturday in San Francisco. They now have the luxury of turning to National League Cy Young favorite Clayton Kershaw on Sunday for the finale of a big three-game series with the division-rival Giants.
San Francisco pulled within a game of first-place Los Angeles by winning Friday's opener 9-0, but the Dodgers pushed their advantage back to two with Saturday's 17-0 rout.
L.A. pounded out 24 hits in the victory, getting home runs from Scott Van Slyke, Juan Uribe and starter Zack Greinke. Hanley Ramirez added four hits and drove in two runs, while Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp both had three hits.
On the mound, Greinke yielded just four hits and fanned five over six innings.
"One of those games where everything goes our way," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.
San Francisco starter Tim Hudson gave up six runs on eight hits over one-plus innings of work. Tim Lincecum allowed five runs on seven hits over three frames of relief.
The Giants saw a 10-game home winning streak come to an end.
"We got knocked out early," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Bochy's club will try to rebound against Kershaw, who is tied for the major league lead in victories (18-3), leads all of baseball with a 1.67 earned run average and is third in the NL with 210 strikeouts.
Kershaw has allowed just three earned runs over a four-start winning streak and has gone at least eight innings in six straight and eight of his last nine starts. That span began with a three-hit shutout of San Francisco on July 26.
The 26-year-old left is 12-5 with a 1.40 ERA and four shutouts lifetime versus the Giants and is coming off a 9-4 win over San Diego on Monday. Kershaw was charged with three runs -- one earned -- on three hits and two walks over eight frames, striking out eight.
The Giants will counter with Yusmeiro Petit, who is coming off a complete-game victory over Arizona on Tuesday. The righty allowed a run on four hits, striking out a season high-tying nine without a walk.
Petit, who has replaced Lincecum in the rotation, threw 68 of his 84 pitches for strikes in logging his second career complete game.
"He's been a lift for us," said Bochy. "He was hitting his spots tonight."
Petit is 5-3 with a 3.62 ERA this year in 36 games with nine starts, and has gone 1-3 with a 4.83 ERA in 12 games versus the Dodgers, with four starts.
The Giants are 8-7 against the Dodgers this season, but Los Angeles has won five of the previous seven matchups between the foes.
