Marlins top Mets to win series
Sep 18, 2014 - 4:37 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Christian Yelich reached base three times and drove in the eventual game-winning run with a seventh-inning double as the Miami Marlins topped the New York Mets on Wednesday, 4-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series.Marcell Ozuna, whose hit streak ended at 11 games after an 0-for-4 performance on Tuesday, and Donovan Solano each had three hits for Miami, which got a quality start out of Henderson Alvarez.
Alvarez (11-6) gave up two runs on eight hits in six innings for the Marlins, who learned Wednesday that injured superstar Giancarlo Stanton will not play again in 2014.
"He was throwing the ball well, he threw a lot of strikes," Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis said of Alvarez.
Stanton sustained multiple injuries when he was struck on the left side of his face by a fastball on Sept. 11. The 24-year-old leads the National League with 37 homers.
Three straight singles with one out in the first inning put Dillon Gee in an immediate hole, and the Mets starter was unable to pitch himself out of it. Solano scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run, and Garrett Jones drove in a run with an infield single down the third-base line.
Yelich walked, stole second and scored on Solano's RBI single in the second inning to give Miami a 3-0 lead.
The Mets got a pair back in the fifth inning, when Gee started a rally with a single to center. Matt den Dekker also singled and with the bases loaded and two down, Lucas Duda ripped a two-run single to center.
Gee was replaced with two outs and a runner on second in the seventh inning, but reliever Josh Edgin couldn't escape without allowing Adeiny Hechavarria to score, as Yelich doubled to make it 4-2.
Gee (7-8) was charged with all four runs on seven hits.
"His numbers are dictated by the fact that he has just not commanded the baseball like he knows how," said Mets manager Terry Collins.
The insurance run proved crucial, as Curtis Granderson grounded to second to score Duda in the bottom of the eighth.
Steve Cishek retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, earning his 37th save of the season.
Game Notes
Gee fell to 3-1 against the Marlins in his career ... Granderson went 0-for-3 against Alvarez, falling to 1-for-17 lifetime against him ... The Mets went 1- for-9 with runners in scoring position.
