Wainwright outduels Fiers, Cards nip Brewers
Sep 18, 2014 - 4:30 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Wainwright notched St. Louis' first hit with two outs in the sixth and tossed his third shutout of the season in the Cardinals' 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.Wainwright (19-9) gave up seven hits and stuck out seven en route to his fifth complete game of the year. His four-start winning streak has allowed him to join Los Angeles Dodgers hurler Clayton Kershaw as the lone 19-game winners this season.
"I would say that was an impressive pitching performance," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "He had everything and then when you watch the ninth and see 95 pop up there and you realize that this guy still had a lot in the tank."
Wainwright, Matt Adams and Jhonny Peralta had the only three hits for the Cardinals, who remained 2 1/2 games ahead of the Pirates for first place in the NL Central. The Pirates beat the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Mike Fiers (6-3) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on three hits while striking out seven over seven innings for the Brewers, who sit 2 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's second Wild Card spot.
Fiers had issued just one walk before Wainwright singled up the middle in the sixth. Matt Carpenter struck out looking to end the inning.
St. Louis broke the scoreless tie in the seventh. Matt Holliday worked a one- out walk after just missing a home run down the left-field line. Adams followed with a single to center that resulted in a Carlos Gomez fielding error. Holliday just beat the throw home to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Adams moved to second on the play and then scored on a single by Peralta. Fiers retired the next two batters to avoid further damage.
Earlier, the Brewers left the bases loaded in the fourth on singles from Jonathan Lucroy and Gerardo Parra along with a walk to Lyle Overbay. Jean Segura flied out to center to end the frame.
"The guy, he's one of the best," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Wainwright. "That's what he's supposed to do against a team that swings. With great command, he goes through the lineup with not very many pitches."
Game Notes
The Cardinals improved to 11-7 versus the Brewers this year ... Wainwright is tied with Miami's Henderson Alvarez for the league lead in shutouts. It was the ninth shutout of Wainwright's career ... It was St. Louis' 21st shutout of the season, the most by any Cardinals team since the mound was lowered in 1969.
