Hamels pitches Phillies past Padres

Sep 18, 2014 - 6:36 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cole Hamels fired seven innings of one-run ball and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres, 5-2, in the third test of a four-game set.

Hamels (9-7) struck out nine, gave up seven hits and walked one for the Phillies, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Ben Revere added a two-run double in the triumph.

"I'm just trying to get outs, no matter what the score is for us," Hamels said.

Eric Stults (7-17) surrendered four runs on six hits over 4 1/3 frames for San Diego.

The Padres led 1-0 before the Phillies plated four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to surge ahead.

Singles by Darin Ruf, Domonic Brown and Carlos Ruiz to begin the fifth loaded the bases and a Freddy Galvis base hit up the middle brought home Ruf and Brown. Hamels then laid down a bunt to advance both runners and Revere's ground-rule double down the left-field line pushed across Ruiz and Galvis.

"Some balls found holes," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Ruf doubled to lead off the sixth and Brown singled before Ruf scored on Ruiz's sacrifice fly to give Philadelphia a 5-1 advantage.

Alexi Amarista's RBI single in the ninth cut the deficit to 5-2.

Earlier, Cameron Maybin's RBI single opened the scoring for San Diego in the fourth.

Game Notes

The Phillies are 6-1 in Hamels' last seven starts. Hamels hasn't given up more than three runs since May 27 against Colorado ... The Phillies were 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while San Diego finished 2-for-8.
