Amarista, Venable homer as Padres top Phillies

Sep 19, 2014 - 5:41 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexi Amarista went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI as the San Diego Padres capped a four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 7-3 victory on Thursday.

Will Venable hit a late three-run homer, while Seth Smith added two hits and an RBI behind Robbie Erlin (4-4), who held the Phillies to one run on five hits over six frames in his first start since May 17.

"He threw the ball as though his elbow was fine," Padres manager Bud Black said. "It was a solid game."

The Padres took three of four in the set for their first series win over Philadelphia since April 17-20, 2009.

Kyle Kendrick (9-13) lasted five innings and allowed six hits, five walks and three runs for the Phillies, whose first run came in the fourth inning courtesy of Domonic Brown's RBI single.

"I didn't have any command," Kendrick said.

Amarista had given the Padres an early 1-0 lead with a home run in the second, then put the hosts in front again with a sac fly in the fourth.

Smith and Cory Spangenberg tacked on RBI singles in the fifth and sixth frames, respectively, and Venable's blast in the eighth essentially sealed the win.

Run-scoring singles from pinch-hitter Cesar Hernandez and Ben Revere in the ninth made the final score somewhat more respectable.

Game Notes
